Di Maggio's Serves Up a Taste of Spain

Jobs boost for Glasgow's west end
as tapas bar heralds expansion

LEADING Scottish restaurant chain Di Maggio's has unveiled expansion plans and a jobs boost in Glasgow.

Di Maggios Joint Managing Director Tony ConettaThe renowned Italian chain has invested £850,000 in creating an authentic Spanish tapas bar called Cafe Andaluz in Glasgow's vibrant west end.

And there is a promise of further tapas bars if the Company's first-ever venture offering Spanish cuisine proves successful.

Forty positions have been created at the business in Cresswell Lane, Hillhead, taking the total number of staff at the Di Maggio's Group to 440 - the highest ever for the business which now has nine restaurants across west Central Scotland.

The jobs boost means Di Maggio's are now one of the largest privately-owned restaurant chains in the country.

Di Maggio's restaurants are located in Glasgow city centre, Shawlands, the west end, Airdrie, East Kilbride and Hamilton.

Joint managing director Tony Conetta hailed Cafe Andaluz as an "important diversification" for the business.

Cafe Andaluz was formerly the Underground Gallery and has been totally transformed with furniture and decor sourced in Spain to reinforce the authentic theme of the restaurant.

Di Maggio's was founded in the mid 1980s by Tony's father Joe. Tony's business partner Mario Gizzi is the other joint managing director.

Tony added: "Cafe Andaluz is a totally separate entity from the existing Di Maggio's chain but we are determined to offer the same high quality and value for money which has underpinned the success of Di Maggio's over the years.

"We have undertaken considerable research to ensure the restaurant has an authentic Spanish ambience. The west end is a thriving area in terms of restaurants and we are very confident of the success of this new venture.

"We are also pleased to be doing our bit in delivering more jobs for the restaurant sector of the Scottish economy. The 40 extra posts created by Cafe Andaluz brings our total staff numbers to 440. We firmly believe our dedicated and hardworking staff contribute enormously to the success of our restaurants."

Tony has hired Stuart Wilson as head chef from a renowned city centre restaurant in Glasgow while Cafe Andaluz is being managed by Spaniard Miguel Perez.
