The cost varies. Our fee is calculated on the nature of the work and the
time spent on it. Crisis PR - in other words handling a difficult issue - is
more costly. This is because we have to formulate an agreed strategy - often
very quickly - to overcome sudden negative publicity. We have to spend more
time on it and that means a higher fee.
Do we have to pay a retainer or can we pay for Ross Wilson PR to carrying
out a single PR task?
You can ask us to carry out a one-off PR task. This is particularly useful
if a business has never used public relations before. An example might be an
announcement by a company that it is taking on more staff or that it has won
a business accolade. From a client's point of view, a retainer would not
make economic sense. So we don't insist on it.
We will quote you a price for creating a news release and issuing it to the print and broadcast media. Once the price is agreed (plus VAT) that is the total you will pay. We will also send you details of any media coverage including press cuttings which arise from the news release at no extra charge.
If I don't fancy that idea, can I pay Ross Wilson PR to look after my PR on
a regular basis?
Yes. If this is your preferred option, we will give you a price for a
monthly retainer. This means we will agree a PR strategy with you and
implement it over a period for a set monthly fee. We will handle calls from
the media on your behalf, if required. For the first three months of the
relationship we will also meet the cost of providing you with the cuttings
arising from news releases which are issued.
We can work alongside any internal PR arrangements you already have or do it
all for you.
Will I have to pay a fee just for someone from Ross Wilson PR to turn up at
a meeting and drink my coffee?
Absolutely not. Our initial consultation is free provided you throw in some biscuits with the coffee. Further meetings are also free. You will NEVER be charged by us for attending a meeting with you because we don't think that's fair.
This all sounds like a good idea but shouldn't I just stick with advertising to promote my business?
Advertising has its place but remember that most people buy newspapers to
read the news - not the ads. And some of these could be about YOUR business. Adverts are simply ways of raising revenue for newspapers because
the cover price can't meet the cost of producing them.
When you compare the cost of PR with the cost of placing a newspaper advert
we believe you will be pleasantly surprised how we can save you a small
fortune.
Who is this guy Ross Wilson?
Ross is a former reporter and Business Editor of the Daily Record newspaper.
He believes the best PR companies are run by former journalists because they
know how to write news releases properly in a way newspapers, magazines and
the broadcast media find appealing.
As Managing Consultant of the business, Ross retains excellent contacts
within the major news outlets in Scotland and beyond.
He won the title of Campaigning Writer of the Year in the Bank of Scotland
Press Awards in 1993 for exposing a vacuum company's ill-fated free-flights
promotion. The campaign resulted in the vacuum company having to fork out -
by their own admission - £50 million to sort out the shambles. It remains
one of the biggest consumer successes ever carried out by a national
newspaper.
Away from work he is an accomplished pianist - handy for pub singalongs and
clients' Christmas parties.
